Brother DCP-8040
The brother dcp-8040 provides most of the features you’d expect in a $400 laser multifunction device, including a 50-page automatic document feeder with a roomy, legal-size flatbed 600-by-2,400dpi color scanner. Its 21-page-per-minute monochrome laser printer engine delivers decent print quality. Oddly, however, the DCP-8040 does not include a fax machine. Without a fax, this machine is simpler than most multifunctions, but it’s unsuitable for many small or home offices. Most nonfaxing multifunctions are built around color inkjet printers and other features that appeal more to creatives than to business managers, but this laser-based device closely resembles the fax-capable Brother MFC-8440, which the DCP-8040 paces or beats on most image-quality and speed tests for $50 less. With no fax features to clutter the control panel, the Brother DCP-8040 looks cleaner than other multifunctions. It’s 20 inches wide across the top by 17 inches deep, standing 18 inches high, with a 250-sheet paper tray nestled in the narrower, 14-inch-wide base. Above the paper tray, a hand-feed slot takes single sheets or envelopes. The same slot opens to expose the toner cartridge and the imaging drum, which snap together and slide easily into the printer on smooth grooves. The 20,000-page imaging drum costs $180. Toner costs $70 for a 3,300-page cartridge or $92 for a 6,700-page cartridge. That prices out to a whopping 3 cents per page with the small cartridge, or 2.3 cents with the big one–no bargain.
The control panel sits on a ledge above the recessed output slot, with its five-line, 22-character backlit LCD flanked by clusters of buttons for copying and scanning. A mushroom-cap-shaped scanner bed and an automatic document feeder top off the device. You can connect the DCP-8040 to a Mac or PC via a parallel port or the up-to-date USB 2.0, cables not included. Brother also sells an Ethernet option for $200(xerox phaser). The DCP-8040 gets kudos for a design that includes strong, deep handgrips at the base and under the scanner bed, making it easy to move the 35-pound machine. The narrow base of the device frees up room on your desk. We also like the control panel’s easy-to-read backlit LCD, as well as the time-saving buttons designated for frequently used features. The scanner lid slides up about an inch on its hinges, but the lid won’t come off to let you scan chunky objects or books.
Design aside, the DCP-8040′s installation can be a little rocky. In our informal tests, we ran into a glitch connecting the multifunction device to a PC: it stopped between loading the software bundle and the drivers, so we had to relaunch it. The DCP-8040 runs on Windows 98 and up, plus Mac OS 8.6 and higher. Walking through the simple LCD menus and numeric keypad on the Brother DCP-8040 won’t tax your technical skills, and most features beyond setup have their own buttons. For example, you can switch paper sources with the Tray Select button, collate a copy job with the Sort button, or shrink and copy multiple documents onto one page with another button. The LCD allows a clear display of your choices, such as the number of copies to print.
For more paper capacity than the 250 sheets provided by the DCP-8040, you can stack the machine on top of a second 250-sheet paper tray for $200. The DCP-8045D, a similar model with a 50-page auxiliary tray and an internal duplexer, costs $100 more. Brother provides an adequate 32MB of standard memory and will support a whopping 160MB if you need to expand. The only thing the DCP-8040 lacks, of course, is the ability to send and receive paper and electronic faxes. You may be able to make up for that with the fax modem in your computer or with a standalone fax machine. Brother bundles a useful software collection with this multifunction. For Windows, you get ScanSoft PaperPort, a document-archiving database with the OmniPage optical character recognition engine, which converts scanned pages into live text. On the Mac, Presto PageManager provides both document archiving and OCR. Overall, the Brother DCP-8040 performed well and quietly in CNET Labs’ tests at its factory-default settings, which you can adjust to improve output and performance.
Speedwise, the DCP-8040 produced 15.5 pages per minute (ppm) of text and 15.2ppm of graphics, ranking among the fastest multifunction lasers we’ve seen. The winner in this category, the Brother MFC-8220, scored 16.2ppm for text and equaled the MFC-8040′s graphics printing rate. Besides speed, the DCP-8040 also offers decent print quality. In our tests, text was too bright but otherwise crisp and sharp, with even the tiniest font sizes legible to the naked eye. The brightness didn’t mar the text, but it undermined the graphics quality, with jagged transitions between colors, imprecise shading, and sporadic banding. Contrary to its printing swiftness, the DCP-8040 lagged in scanning speed, averaging 3.4ppm for color and 5.6ppm for grayscale images. However, thanks to its quick printing, the machine copies at an impressive 6.2ppm.
Color scans were decent, with detailed photographs and text. But the quality of colors, especially yellows, could improve. Grayscale scans were dark overall with too much contrast, losing the lightest and darkest ends of the spectrum.

The easy way of recovering digital pictures
The progress moves at increasing pace. In the world of digital photography, this means more megapixels with every new camera. Higher megapixel images naturally occupy more space on the storage media, so new, higher-capacity memory cards are being released along with the new cameras. However, higher megapixel density, more megabytes per image and higher storage densities don’t mean higher reliability. Elements of nature, user errors and bugs in the camera’s firmware still account for loss of pictures quite regularly.
However, you are not left without options even if you discover an empty or even inaccessible memory card after a shooting session. There are plenty of data recovery products that can help you recover the pictures, but not all of them are created equal. All of them have one thing in common: in order to recover your pictures, refrain from storing data on the damaged card, formatting it or using it for taking pictures!
Hetman Photo Recovery by Hetman Software is one of the better recovery tools for digital pictures. Featuring easy recovery of digital pictures in a variety of formats, Hetman Photo Recovery supports RAW files for many SLR cameras by major manufacturers. The wizard-based user interface makes the recovery a matter of clicking through the wizard. The entire process of recovering digital pictures can be as simple as clicking Next!
But don’t be fooled by the simplistic user interface. Under the hood, Hetman Photo Recovery features sophisticated recovery algorithms found in much more expensive commercial data recovery products. Hetman Photo Recovery goes beyond typical undelete programs, and is often able to recover pictures and RAW images from badly damaged memory cards, disks and other media. The tool scans and analyzes both the file system and the entire contents of the memory card in order to locate the beginning and end of each and every recoverable image. Even if the card seems empty or is inaccessible as a drive letter, Hetman Photo Recovery can often recover the entire shooting session.
Hetman Photo Recovery supports a variety of storage media, including all major types of memory cards such as Compact Flash, Memory Stick, SD, SDHC, and xD, hard disks, and even digital cameras connected directly to the computer via a USB cord. The recovery tool supports all revisions of FAT or NTFS file systems, and works in every version of Windows from Windows 95 to Vista and 2003 Server.
Advanced photographers will find Hetman Photo Recovery irreplaceable thanks to its full support of RAW files. Supporting RAW formats by all major manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and SONY, Hetman Photo Recovery treats RAW images just like pictures, providing the full pre-recovery preview capability as well as applying its proprietary signature search algorithm for surefooted recovery.
A unique combination of easy user interface and sophisticated image recovery algorithms, Hetman Photo Recovery is a perfect image recovery solution for both novice and advanced photographers. Download a free evaluation version of Hetman Photo Recovery at software page.

Abotut the 18-55mm Lens hood of Pentax?
What size of Lens hood does the 18-55mm require? Does any size of hood fit the 18-55mm Lens?
and…I own a new Pentax k-x camera. I’d like to know what is the longest lens that the k-x can hold on to?
and lastly
) How much is the 60-250mm lens?
Here’s the official lens hood for $22: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/419170-REG/Pentax_38741_PH_RBA_Lens_Hood.html
You can also buy a cheap, generic 52mm lens hood but if it extends too much or too little you might see adverse effects. Best to experiment in a camera store.
Here’s the 60-250mm lens for $1.200: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/594199-USA/Pentax_21750_Zoom_Telephoto_60_250mm_f_4.html
As for how long a lens can be… as long as you like. You can attach the camera to a telescope. But after a certain point you don’t mount the camera on a tripod anymore – you mount the lens on a tripod and the K-x just dangles in space. This is already the case with the 60-250mm.

Pentax K10d Slr Camera Review
In this article, we’re going to review the Pentax K10D SLR Camera .The Pentax K10D SLR Camera is a 10.2 mega pixel camera KAF2 and supports SD memory(18-55mm lens kit).
The Pentax K10D SLR Camera is a bulky camera which features both a top LCD and rear screen LCD. It is at home in a number of environments. Colours are punchy and reds vibrant, without any overbearing saturation the white balance was slightly to orange, but not so much as as to be distracting. When taking sports images the level of focus was reliable. Being able to switch from the standard multi-zone focus mode back to centre focus is extremely useful and the continuous Autofocus mode is reliably rapid. The colours were eye catching, without making the background to overbearing.
The Pentax K10D SLR Camera has handy extras in the menu system such as the landscape-friendly bulb model. The camera is more backward compatible than any DSLR that allows the enthusiast to dig into 25 million lenses that Pentax has made since the early 70′s.
The Pentax K10D has a protective weatherproof body to help prevent various unwanted elements infiltrating the body.
Being a heavy weight model without over-reliance on menu screens, the Pentax K10D SLR Camera will certainly find a home amongst the more savvy consumers. It isn’t as user friendly as some of the competitions but a a great camera nonetheless for more experienced users.

Main article: Dynamic range#Photography
In photography, dynamic range is measured in EV differences (known as stops) between the brightest and darkest parts of the image that show detail. An increase of one EV or one stop is a doubling of the amount of light.

High-dynamic-range photographs are generally achieved by capturing multiple standard photographs, often using exposure bracketing, and then merging them into an HDR image. Digital photographs are often encoded in a camera’s raw image format, because 8 bit JPEG encoding clips the camera’s possible dynamic range (and also introduces undesirable effects due to the lossy compression).
Any camera that allows manual over- or under-exposure of a photo can be used to create HDR images.
Some cameras have an auto exposure bracketing (AEB) feature with a far greater dynamic range than others, from the 3 EV of the Canon EOS 40D, to the 18 EV of the Canon EOS-1D Mark II.
The Pentax K-7 DSLR has an HDR mode which captures an HDR image and then outputs (only) a tone-mapped JPEG file.

Mathematics
Contrast ratio = 2(EV difference)
EV difference = log2(Contrast ratio)
The fact that an increase of 1 EV indicates a doubling of light means that EV is often represented on a base-2 logarithmic scale.
The human perception of brightness is well approximated by a Steven’s power law, which over a reasonable range is close to logarithmic, as described by the Weberechner law, which is one reason that logarithmic measures of light intensity are often used.
Representing HDR images on LDR displays
Contrast reduction
HDR images can easily be represented on common LDR devices, such as computer monitors and photographic prints, by simply reducing the contrast, just as all image editing software is capable of doing.
Clipping and compressing dynamic range
Scenes with high dynamic ranges are often represented on LDR devices by cropping the dynamic range, cutting off the darkest and brightest details, or alternatively with an S conversion curve that compresses contrast progressively and more aggressively in the highlights and shadows while leaving the middle portions of the contrast range relatively unaffected.
An example of a rendering of an HDRI tone-mapped image in a New York City nighttime cityscape.
Tone mapping
Main article: Tone mapping
Tone mapping reduces the dynamic range, or contrast ratio, of the entire image, while retaining localized contrast (between neighboring pixels), tapping into research on how the human eye and visual cortex perceive a scene, trying to represent the whole dynamic range while retaining realistic color and contrast.
Images with too much tone mapping processing have their range over-compressed, creating a surreal low-dynamic-range rendering of a high-dynamic-range scene.
Comparison with traditional digital images
Information stored in high dynamic range images typically corresponds to the physical values of luminance or radiance that can be observed in the real world. This is different from traditional digital images, which represent colors that should appear on a monitor or a paper print. Therefore, HDR image formats are often called “scene-referred”, in contrast to traditional digital images, which are “device-referred” or “output-referred”. Furthermore, traditional images are usually encoded for the human visual system (maximizing the visual information stored in the fixed number of bits), which is usually called “gamma encoding” or “gamma correction”. The values stored for HDR images are often gamma compressed (power law) or logarithmically encoded, or floating-point linear values, since fixed-point linear encodings are increasingly inefficient over higher dynamic ranges.
HDR images often use a higher number of bits per color channel than traditional images to represent many more colors over a much wider dynamic range. 16-bit (“half precision”) or 32-bit floating point numbers are often used to represent HDR pixels. However, when the appropriate transfer function is used, HDR pixels for some applications can be represented with as few as 1012 bits for luminance and 8 bits for chrominance without introducing any visible quantization artifacts.
History of HDR photography
1850
The idea of using several exposures to fix a too-extreme range of luminance was pioneered as early as the 1850s by Gustave Le Gray to render seascapes showing both the sky and the sea. Such rendering was impossible at the time using standard techniques, the luminosity range being too extreme. Le Gray used one negative for the sky, and another one with a longer exposure for the sea, and combined the two in a single picture in positive.
1930
High dynamic range imaging was originally developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Charles Wyckoff. Wyckoff’s detailed pictures of nuclear explosions appeared on the cover of Life magazine in the mid 1940s. Wyckoff implemented local neighborhood tone remapping to combine differently exposed film layers into one single image of greater dynamic range.
1980
The desirability of HDR has been recognized for decades, but its wider usage was, until quite recently, precluded by the limitations imposed by the available computer processing power. Probably the first practical application of HDRI was by the movie industry in late 1980s and, in 1985, Gregory Ward created the Radiance RGBE image file format which was the first (and still the most commonly used) HDR imaging file format.
Wyckoff’s concept of neighborhood tone mapping was applied to video cameras by a group from the Technion in Israel led by Prof. Y.Y.Zeevi who filed for a patent on this concept in 1988. In 1993 the first commercial medical camera was introduced that performed real time capturing of multiple images with different exposures, and producing an HDR video image.
Modern HDR imaging uses a completely different approach, based on making a high-dynamic range luminance or light map using only global image operations (across the entire image), and then tone mapping this result. Global HDR was first introduced in 1993 resulting in a mathematical theory of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter that was published in 1995 by Steve Mann and Rosalind Picard. In 1997 this global-HDR technique of combining several differently exposed images to produce a single HDR image was presented to the computer graphics community by Paul Debevec.
This method was developed to produce a high dynamic range image from a set of photographs taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy-to-use desktop software, the term HDR is now popularly used to refer to this process. This composite technique is different from (and may be of lesser or greater quality than) the production of an image from a single exposure of a sensor that has a native high dynamic range. Tone mapping is also used to display HDR images on devices with a low native dynamic range, such as a computer screen.
1996
Steve Mann developed and patented the global-HDR method for producing digital images having extended dynamic range at the MIT Media Laboratory. Mann’s method involved a two-step procedure: (1) generate a single floating point image array by global-only image operations (operations that affect all pixels identically, without regard to their local neighborhoods); and then (2) convert this image array, using local neighborhood processing (tone-remapping, etc.), into an HDR image. The image array generated by the first step of Mann’s process is called a “lightspace image”, “lightspace picture”, or “radiance map”. Another benefit of global-HDR imaging is that it provides access to the intermediate light or radiance map, which has been used for computer vision, and other image processing operations.
1997
In 1997 this technique of combining several differently exposed images to produce a single HDR image was presented to the public by Paul Debevec.

Photoshop CS2 introduced the Merge to HDR function.
In many ways, Photoshop CS2′s HDR function is the holy grail of dynamic range. With properly shot and processed files it allows photographers to easily create images that were previously impossible, or at least very difficult to accomplish. But, good as it is, like a gun or nuclear power, it can be a force for evil as well as good.
Not every image needs to have 10-15 stops of dynamic range. In fact, most photographs look quite nice, thank you very much, with the 5-7 stops of dynamic range that we’re used to. I fully expect to see some really silly if not downright ugly images in the months ahead, as photographers get their copies of Photoshop CS2 and start discovering what the HDR function is capable of.
But, as with all such tool [sic], in the hands of sensitive artists and competent craftsmen, I’m sure that we will start to be shown the world in new and exciting ways.

Until recently there were no “pure” examples of HDR based cinematography, since the effects were most commonly used during composited sequences in films. However with the advent of low cost consumer digital cameras, many amateurs began posting tone mapped HDR timelapse videos on the Internet. In 2008 Mobius/Quark Films released “Silicon Valley Timelapse” which is said to feature almost 1.1 million frames of tone mapped HDR, making it the largest single source of tone mapped HDR footage available to date.[citation needed]

Which translator do you prefer?
I’ve read Crime and Punishment translated by Constance Garnett, but I read several passages of The Brothers Karamazov online and I much preferred the Pevear/Volokonsky translation. I purchased the P/V translation, but I was just curious if other novels such as War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Notes From The Underground, and The Idiot, are better read through the P/V or Garnett translations. Any thoughts?
I can’t speak to most of these books specifically, but I recommend anybody EXCEPT Constance Garnett.
I know enough Russian to check some of her work and it is BAD. With just a cursory look I found a sentence where she missed a “not” which changed the sense of the sentence altogether.
I also suspect her of omitting off-color stuff that might have offended her Victorian contemporaries.
Unfortunately her translations are by far the most common in public libraries. If it was up to me, I’d have all her works replaced.

Brother XL2230 Sewing Machine Review
The Brother XL2230 sewing machine is a great basic machine to have around for mending and light tasks. Due to its simple operation, it’s also a great option for young kids. Weighing a nice, light 11 pounds, it can easily be taken to sewing classes, groups or a friend’s house.
Setting up this machine in order to sew is simple and uncomplicated. The controls are easy to use and well marked. It runs quietly and the instruction manual is easy to understand.

About the Author
See how the Brother XL2230 stacks up to other sewing machines in the XL series here: Brother XL2230. You can compare sewing machines, learn how to find the best deal, and get in depth feature and product information here: http://www.sewing-machines-for-beginners.com/.
Best sewing machine for beginner?
Need suggestions on the best sewing machine for a beginner. What else is needed besides the machine, thread & material? Are metal bobbins the best? I have no idea! HELP! Prefer something under $80.00 US. Looking at a Brother LS2000 (20 stitch) right now for extremely good price.
You will get a couple bobbins with the machine as well as a few needles.
Most new sewing machines use plastic bobbins, Class A or Class 15 (both are the same size).
A computorized sewing machine that has a low bobbin sensor definately requires the use of plastic bobbins.
You can start with spools of white, gray, tan and black thread as these will blend with most fabric colors and patterns.
Buy a extra package of needles – Schmetz has an assortment package. Select the needle size based on the fabric being sewn – this will be in the sewing machine manual.
You also need an iron and ironing surface, such as an ironing mat or ironing board.
You will also need scissors, straight pins, pin cushion, seam guide & measuring tape – Singer and Simplicity both have a kit with all this included. You can find the kit with the sewing notions.
When you get the machine home, open then manual and READ and apply each step of the instructions for each feature of the machine – this is the quickest and fastest way to learn a new-to-you machine no matter your experience level.
Brother is a great brand. You will probably not need all those extra stitches.
There is a lot of good information at this site – http://www.simplicity.com/t-classroom.aspx Be sure to watch the video for the sewing buddy. You may never make a jumper, but the basic information given is invaluable.
If you choose to smooth out the wrinkles in a pattern with an iron, make sure there is NO STEAM and the setting is warm.
Best wishes for many successful projects. Take small steps, time-outs and enjoy this craft that will benefit you for the rest of your long life.
