Assisi Embroidery – An Unusual Embroidery Style
On a recent trip to Assisi, Italy – the charming medieval hill town where Saint Francis was born – I noticed local women embroidering in a style that was new to me. They were only embroidering the background and not the motifs. Whereas, in the needlework I had learned, I embroidered the motifs and left the background plain. Also the designs were traditional medieval motifs such as you see everywhere in the churches in Italy. In this article, you will discover the characteristics and history of Assisi embroidery.
What Is Assisi Embroidery?
Assisi embroidery is counted-thread embroidery based on an Italian tradition where the motifs are only outlined in a double running (Holbein) stitch, leaving the interior void. Traditionally, the background was filled with long-armed cross stitch. Normal cross stitch is also used.
The following design characteristics distinguish Assisi embroidery from other voided styles and are what make it so powerful and charming.
Traditional motifs were based on medieval symbology featuring grotesque figures of satyrs, demons, ancient mythical birds and animals, beasts. Other patterns look like flowers, branches, leaves, fruit. Often a candelabra design is used to separate the mirrored motifs. The designs are often beautiful and very mysterious. Earlier designs from the 13th and 14th centuries are more primitive, rugged. In the 15th and 16th centuries, they became more sophisticated and natural.
The motifs are laid out in symmetrical pairs surrounded by elaborate scrollwork. Some motifs are used to connect different parts of the design so that there is never a lot of empty space. Often these motifs are designed in a very beautiful way that draws the eye to the main motifs. The repetition and symmetry of the motifs give movement and rhythm to the piece.
The top and bottom of the design was usually bordered by repeating geometric or flower motifs. The borders are worked in a straight stitch with an occasional cross stitch. The color is usually the same color as the background.
Assisi embroidery is worked in only two colors – one color for the background and a contrasting color to outline the motifs. Traditionally red, blue, green or gold was used for the background with black or brown outlines.
History of Assisi Embroidery
Italy has a long tradition of embroidery and other handicrafts. In the 13th century, an embroidery style was created in the monasteries that became the basis for Assisi embroidery. The motifs were voided on fine linen cloth with the outlines and background embroidered with colored silk. These articles were used for religious purposes such as altar cloths and chasubles.
By the 16th century, Assisi embroidery had become very popular and spread into the secular community. However, it fell into decline and many of the designs and motifs were lost in the eighteenth century.
After the new state of Italy was founded in 1861, a movement was started to rediscover and revive traditional handicrafts and provide employment to poor women. in 1902, the “Laboratorio Ricreativo Festivo Feminale San Francisci di Assisi” was founded in Assisi to accomplish these goals. They took the traditional embroidery techniques and simplified them. Embroidery cotton was used instead of silk. The outlines were counted instead of drawn freely on the cloth. The designs and complicated borders were simplified or new designs created. The background was done in simple cross stitch. The color schemes remained the same.
This cottage industry flourished and the more modern designs spread throughout Italy, Europe and rest of the world. In Assisi, the traditional style is still alive and you can see local women sitting in front of their houses and embroidering for the local co-operative embroidery shop.

Photography Equipment – What’s in my camera bag?
This is a question that I’m asked often and it’s a hard one to answer. When I travel I tend to “travel light”, often only carrying one body and 2 lenses plus assorted other paraphernalia. When I have the luxury of travvelling by car or boat I tend to carry more, closer to what I have listed below. So, here’s my rant about what’s in my bag. Any comments?
To start with, I use Nikon cameras. I’m often asked why I use Nikon rather than Canon and the answer goes back about thirty years when I first started doing photography seriously. A friend had a Canon F1 with a motor drive and I had a few simple Nikon F’s, no meter, just the basic cameras. What struck me about the Canon was how heavy and bulky the package was. Now, this is nothing against Canon as the equivalent Nikon at the time was likely just as heavy and bulky. Being on a shoestring budget for many of my early years I acquired a large quantity of used Nikkor lenses and other miscellaneous camera system components.Years later Pentax came out with a fancy little professional camera, the Pentax LX. The lenses were good and sharp, everything was lighter than the equivalent Nikon equipment and I sold all of my beat up Nikon gear and temporarily switched to Pentax. While I thoroughly enjoyed using the Pentax equipment the set-up suffered from lack of development and the bodies had a tendency to have their shutters crack at inopportune moments. It was time to switch back to Nikon again.
With the digital age it was clear that Nikon or Canon would get my business. In most ways it was a no brainer for me, I had all these Nikkor lenses, why reinvest in a completely new system? That’s why I’m still using Nikon. Is Nikon better than Canon? My guess is that any of the modern cameras can produce great images with a good photographer operating them. All these systems can also produce terrible results with an incompetent photographer operating them. As well, I have started using many third party lenses that can be purchased for many different systems. I guess it really comes down to personal preference.
So what’s in my bag? I’ll start with the weird and accessory items:

Bush/cheney Violated Americans Rights While in Office

The United States Government during the Bush administration violated Americans constitutional rights through wire taping and collecting private computer communications and reading emails illegally and without a warrant. According to some experts this is still going in the Obama administration.
The government listens to Americans phone calls and monitors our e-mails, faxes and computer key strokes. Those who have claimed that the government was guilty of spying on Americans are labeled as kooks or dubbed by the government as non-credible. No body wants this to be happening to them but according to one of NSA’s own all Americans are victims of warrant less wire taping and illegal monitoring our communications.
A former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice, who earlier charged and helped expose the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping way back in December 2005, has now come forward with even more startling allegations. Tice told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on national television that the NSA’s programs that spied on Americans were not only much broader than previously acknowledged but specifically targeted certain groups including American journalists.
“The National Security Agency had access to all Americans’ communications — faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications,” Tice claimed. “It didn’t matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications.”
The first and the fourth amendment says that we all have a right to freedom of speech, religion, and freedom of the press and the fourth amendment says that the government can not search our things without a warrant and when they phone tap our phones and read our emails without a warrant they are basically taking our rights away from us.
In 1790 they added the 4 amendment to the bill of rights, the right to be secure in our persons, houses, papers, and effects against “unreasonable searches”. Our founders believed what you say is not the governments business unless there is evidence that you have committed a crime. The surveillance program is unconstitutional and President Obama should sign an executive order putting an immediate end to this injustice. Many in Congress think the new president should call for investigations of possible criminal activities and violations of law by Bush and Cheney.
On July 9, 2008, the US Senate passed a bill expanding legal authority for electronic wiretaps by spy agencies, handing victory to President George W. Bush after a standoff over anti-terror strategy. Then-Senator Obama, along with newly appointed Secretary of State Clinton, said they would support Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn) in filibustering the GOP effort, specifically when it came to immunity for the private telecom companies which allowed the NSA to conduct warrantless spying.
Obama untimately “compromised” saying: “The President’s illegal program of warrantless surveillance will be over. It restores FISA and existing criminal wiretap statutes as the exclusive means to conduct surveillance – making it clear that the President cannot circumvent the law and disregard the civil liberties of the American people.”
Tice further explained that “even for the NSA it’s impossible to literally collect all communications. … What was done was sort of an ability to look at the metadata … and ferret that information to determine what communications would ultimately be collected.”
According to Tice, in addition to this “low-tech, dragnet” approach, the NSA also had the ability to hone in on specific groups, and that was the aspect he himself was involved with. However, even within the NSA there was a cover story meant to prevent people like Tice from realizing what they were doing.
“In one of the operations that I was in, we looked at organizations, just supposedly so that we would not target them,” Tice told Olbermann. “What I was finding out, though, is that the collection on those organizations was 24/7 and 365 days a year — and it made no sense. … I started to investigate that. That’s about the time when they came after me to fire me.”
When Olbermann pressed him for specifics, Tice offered, “An organization that was collected on were US news organizations and reporters and journalists.”
“To what purpose?” Olbermann asked. “I mean, is there a file somewhere full of every email sent by all the reporters at the New York Times? Is there a recording somewhere of every conversation I had with my little nephew in upstate New York?”
Tice did not answer directly, but simply stated, “If it was involved in this specific avenue of collection, it would be everything.” He added, however, that he had no idea what was ultimately done with the information, except that he was sure it “was digitized and put on databases somewhere.”
Tice first began alleging that there were illegal activities going on at both the NSA and the Defense Intelligence Agency in December 2005, several months after being fired by the NSA. He also served at that time as a source for the New York Times story which revealed the existence of the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping program.
Over the next several months, however, Tice was frustrated in his attempts to testify before Congress, had his credibility attacked by Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, and was subpoenaed by a federal grand jury in an apparent attempt at intimidation.
Tice is now coming forward again because George Bush is finally out of office. He told Olbermann that the Obama administration has not been in touch with him about his latest revelations, but, “I did send a letter to, I think it’s [Obama intelligence adviser John] Brennan — a handwritten letter, because I knew all my communications were tapped, my phones, my computer, and I’ve had the FBI on me like flies on you-know-what … and I’m assuming that he gave the note to our current president — that I intended to say a little bit more than I had in the past.”
Some Americans wonder how NSA eavesdropping affects them when they have nothing to hide. As the government claims, this program is only looking for “terrorist activity,” still all your conversations have to be processed; have to be linked to other calls and sources of “possible” terrorist activity. How it is layed out right now is all it takes is an innocent phone call to a friend, who has placed a call to a friend or relative, who has legitimate business or personal contacts in a foreign country where there may be “suspected terrorists.” Which is most of the world. You have just become a potential target of government investigation – you may be a terrorist supporter, or even a terrorist. Remember “Six Degrees of Separation” (the theory that anyone on earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances with no more than five intermediaries)? The NSA program can easily mistakenly connect you to a terrorist. Furthermore, since the program is being conducted without judicial oversight and under no recognized process there is nothing to restrict how the information obtained under the program is being used.
Mary Walker a sales lady in Manhattan New York said, “Wire taping and reading Americans emails is illegal and is unconstitutional. The government should not be allowed to do warrant less wire taping and read our emails it invades our privacy and violates our rights and we don’t want big brother spying on us using terrorism as their excuse.”

Cheap SLR Cameras – Recommended Cheap Digital SLR Camera
For those who are taking photography classes, the camera that is recommended by their professors are those cheap SLR cameras. Since they are students, they need to be frugal as much as possible – especially during times like these.
However, if they feel that they can pursue photography in the long run and it is not just a short-term hobby, then they can invest in a more expensive one. But at the moment, it is wise to get cheap SLR cameras for the purpose of using it in class.
Reason why these kinds of cameras are recommended is because generally, in photography classes, a 35mm camera is required. It must have full manual control of the aperture, shutter speed, and focus. All three must be manipulated simultaneously.
The aperture as well as the shutter speed must have a range of five stops each. Cheap SLR cameras can provide the user with this option. He does what he needs to get done and at the same time, he is able to save because it is cheap.
There are different kinds of SLR cameras and of course the specific brand must be mentioned. If the photographer is looking for a camera that uses film, then he can opt for the Pentax K100. Sometimes, this can also be acquired at a cheaper price via eBay but there are some accessories that must be added to make it function better. For example, one must shell out $100 to get the lens for the camera.
Remember that the digital and film cameras also have a difference when it comes to what is cheap. Cheap SLR cameras vary and when you are on the look out for these, you must be specific of what you are really using it for.

Canon Digital Cameras just added a new EOS Rebel camera called the XS or the 1000D. This Digital camera is a new entry level DSLR camera that has been launched at a very good price of around Rs.22000 in order to compete with Nikon’s D60 and other Digital Cameras in this range by companies like Pentax, Olympus, and Sony.
This new Canon Digital Camera has a few features common with the canon Rebel XTi that was launched in the year 2006. It has a 10.1-megapixel image sensor and a 2.5-inch LCD, however the Rebel XSi has a 12.1 mega pixel sensor and a 3-inch LCD display.
The 1000D has returned with a 7-point AF sensor which is used in the Rebel XT, where as there is a 9-point AF sensor in the XTi and XSi. The canon Rebel XS also uses a slightly older 12-bit processing system when compared to the XSi’s 14-bit system, and has also eliminated the infrared remote control sensor on the front and the proximity sensors under the viewfinder on the back.
Sony digital camera prices are a little on the higher side because they specialize in offering very eye-pleasing and ultra-slim compact cameras which come under the T series and W series of cameras and also have feature-loaded and high-end cameras with fixed-lenses called the H series. Sony acquired Konica-Minolta’s dSLR division a few years ago and since then they have made and entry into the dSLR market with their own Alpha series of DSLR cameras.
