Long gone are the times when all we had were compact discs, first for music, then for data storage and movies. The DVDs came next, boasting of what seemed then as tons of data storage.
But as they say, times quickly change, and so does the technology. Personal and commercial demands for data storage — be they for music, movies, games, or software — are outstripping the present capacities of optical discs.
Fortunately, two new players in the optical storage scene have arrived — HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Both share similarities, and at the same time compete against each other to become the new standard technology for the future. This match-up will eventually determine the successor to the DVD. While it might seem a boon to consumers to have two disc types to choose from, the battle between the two discs might be disastrous to the industry.
HD-DVD
HD-DVD stands for either High Density Digital Versatile Disc or High Definition Digital Video Disc. The HD-DVD’s look is a familiar one — it is 120 mm in diameter, the same size as a CD and DVD. A single-sided HD-DVD can hold 15 GB of storage, while a dual-sided one can store 30 GB. A triple-sided HD-DVD, a huge possibility courtesy of Toshiba, can hold 45 GB.
HD-DVDs use the iHD Interactive Format, which will allow interactive content to be written for the discs.
Blu-Ray
Blu-Ray takes its name from the laser that it uses — a 405 nm wavelength blue laser, which is also employed by the HD-DVD. A single-sided Blu-ray disc, which shares the same diameter with the HD-DVD, CD, and DVD, can hold 25 GB of storage, while a dual-sided one can store 50 GB.
As a counterpart of the HD-DVD’s iHD Interactive Format, Blu-ray will use the HDMV, as well as Java software support to implement interactive menus.
A Comparison
Factors going for the HD-DVD:
- The DVD Forum is its big daddy.
- The movie industry, which counts among its ranks Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, and Paramount Pictures, supports the format.
- The giants of the IT industry — Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, the DVD Forum, Microsoft, and Intel — also support the format.
- All HD-DVDs and HD-DVD players are backward compatible, meaning they will still support old DVDs.
- It is cheaper and faster to manufacture than Blu-Ray discs.
Factors going for Blu-Ray:
- Blu-Ray has the support of the world’s largest electronic companies — Sony, HP, Dell, Pioneer, Philips, Panasonic, Samsung, Apple, LG-Electronics, and Mitsubishi Electric.
- There are also companies from the entertainment industry that support the format — Electronic Arts, MGM, Walt Disney, and 20th Century Fox.
- The PlayStation 3 will be supporting Blu-Ray discs.
- Blu-Ray discs have faster data transfer rates than their counterparts.
- Blu-Ray discs have larger storage capacities than their counterparts.
As you can see, each side has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s really too tough to call at this point as to who will emerge the winner. But one thing is certain — the commercial industry disdains this battle of attrition, as any format war has the potential to split the market into two incompatible sub-markets; these smaller markets means that the format war kills off revenues.

Issues and Tips for Adventure Photography
Adventure photography is one of my hobbies as a photographer. Taking photo on rainforest and mountain ranges, Adventure photography as far as I know is very abusive and dangerous to your cameras.
Here are some issues and tips you need to know and be aware to minimize damages to your cameras during adventure photography
Sweat – from your head to your arm and trickling into your hand and surely find its way into your camera. Be sure to bring some gloves, this will prevent sweat from running straight to your camera. This will help you protect your hand and fingers from sharp edges.
Tripod – Bring the lightest tripod. Many a times when we didn’t bring ours with us, the moonlit landscape made us scrambling, looking for rocks, boulders, tree stumps and trees to place our long exposures.
Lens and a walkabout lens – Bring two good lenses and one “trek lens” 17-85mm (or wide with fixed aperture like F/2 and a 70-200mm with a fixed aperture (F/4). Forest is frightening nightfall place and you need that fast lens F/2. Trek lens is the lens that you walk with along the trail and your zoom lens that go from 18 to 250 or 28 to 300.
Camera Battery – last 1 day in the forest during your adventure photography. If it’s your first experience on adventure photography you would be shooting anything you haven’t seen before. If your SLR can take AA, bring more. Testing your SLR energy consumption rate is important.
Cold Drains Batteries – If one you are shooting along the mountainous region, expect that your battery deplete its charge 50% in 3 or 4 hours doing nothing. Make shure to keep your battery from cold.
Memory Card at least 4GB – You be shooting and taking pictures something like 4GB – 6GB a day as well bring portable storage device. Separate your blank memory card and its container on your pocket and filled memory card on your bag. Your camera’s LCD says you have 15 shots remaining, obviously replace the card.
Shoot Raw – Shoot raw instead of TIFF or DNG, CRW for Canon cameras, NEF for Nikon cameras and PEF for Pentax camera. Some definitions are lost during the conversion on any other format. RAW saves everything that it saw. RAW is probably the most dominant format for post-processing. It allows you to manage more over the images.
Vest and Cargo Pants – For outdoor photographers. Your vest is great to keep things like your blank memory cards, filters and spares. I recommend the vest with the waterproof pockets and with ventilated mesh. It keeps the camera and bag straps from slipping off your shoulder.
Swiss Knife – Get the one with the longest blade. A 4 inch sharp blade can shave off a young coconut faster than a machete. Make sure you have one on you at all.
Lighter dark at night – As for the lighter, you can use that to start a camp-fire or cook something when you are lost or stranded in the woods/forest during adventure photography.
Compass/Map/GPS – study the forest you are trekking. Remember the landmarks on the terrain in relation to the compass heading. For the GPS, get the type that can read signals indoors. Most hand-held GPS are useless inside the forest and you need to find an open window.
Tent – You need a waterproof and wind resistant tent. Two Man tent is enough to keep you and your things.
Backpack – put everything very important first you need into this bag, 50 litres will do. You could get a bigger backpack like the 70 litres but the bigger the backpack, you probably end up with a broken back or a slipped disc.
Adventure Photography teaches you to be good and condemnatory of your own works in just about all other photography such as potrait, street, architectural, landscape, macro, action/sport etc… you have to work with what is available.
Beside your camera equipments, the most essential factor is your health and fitness. By being physically fit and healthy, you will enjoy your adventure photography that goes with it.

The Canon is very large. But I prefer to use Canon A1 Film. Digital is great, but I wish this machine had the ability to take pictures of both my A1 SLR camera. Not so, it just do not. But the digital camera for under $ 700, while accompanying my 50-250mm zoom lens and a standard 18-55mm, so I had better treatment. I like the camera, I just do not seem to get high quality pictures of me should be given. It could not have my camera. All the bells and whistles are great, as battery life. I use my old Canon Speedlite 199A flash of the camera. It works perfectly. No problem. Oh, and I called Canon tech support before using this flash older, because I read that some think it could damage the camera, you can not. All I can say is, when you launch a new camera, keep your eyes open for special offers to offer Canon lenses.

For an entry-level camera this has given me far more than entry-level results. This is the only DSLR I could afford, and for the money I payed for it I was very pleased. Even with the 18-55 (which has crapped the bed) I was able to get great results even though I had to manual focus the whole time because the lens sucked! Check out my pictures at ([...]) All the pictures on there were taken with the XSi with the 18-55 kit, with the exception of like three pictures that were taken with a crappy fujifilm point and shoot. The camera itself is great. It may not have great build quality, but as long as your not thrashing it around it will hold up… The most important thing about this lens you need to know is KEEP IT CLEAN..don’t take off the lens and leave the mirrors exposed..that was my biggest mistake!

Perfect for starting out
This was my first DLSR that I actually kept 
I ordered the Pentax K-X right before this one and ended up playing with both for a week before I returned the Pentax. I think this Canon is a higher quality product and has the benefit of a large user base, and therefore lots of knowledgebase in the community. The camera is pretty light and easy to use. It may be a bit cheaper on other websites, but I chose to go with Amazon due to the high quality of their customer service and easy return process.

Outdoor picture quality is dissappointing
I’ve had this camera for over 1 year. I am very disappointed with the quality of outdoor shots. Whether sunny, overcast, or cloudy, all of them seem to be over exposed and cool in tone. I have to manually edit every picture in Photo Shop to adjust the color but because of the overexposure the pictures still seem flat. I have 5 different EF lenses of decent to excellent quality and it does not make a difference which lens I use. Also, auto focus which was once very crisp is now very soft. Quite frankly my, small digital point-and-shoot takes better quality pictures than this digital SLR. Even though I’ve always had Canon camera’s I was seriously considering purchasing a Nikon instead of this camera because I was not happy with my last canon camera (A95). But, after so many years I did not want to judge Canon based on one camera. Well, because my last two Canon purchases were extrmeley disappointing I will not by another and I now regret not purchasing the Nikon.
