Should I replace my printer with another inkjet or buy a laser?
I need to replace my old Brother inkjet printer. Ive been looking at the smaller lasers because I hear that they can print better, but on the other hand I hear that inkjets have become so close to laser, its not worth it to spend the money.
I will be doing mostly text, but will also need to print letterhead and marketing materials from time to time.
The lasers I am looking at are the all-in-ones that go for about $600-700 like the Xerox, Brother or Epsons.
So, should I stick with another inkjet that I can get for ~$200 or should I spend the money and buy one of the ~$600 lasers?
I should add that I maybe print about 20-40 sheets of paper a week and will be needing to print things like flyers and such soon. Its not so much about the lifespan that Im worried about as even lasers get discontinued as often as inkjets do, but will I really notice that much difference in print quality to justify another $400-500?
The printer you choose should depend on your needs & budget. Here’s a rough list of pros & cons for each technology:
Inkjets
- typically not waterfast
- slower than lasers unless its a high-end printer
- absolute photo quality
- color capable
Laserjets
- waterfast so if you are printing brochures, this would make sense
- can come in monochrome or color, depending on budget
- not photo capable, so dont expect photo-lab quality
- typically faster than inkjets
- higher cost but usually lower running costs if printing large volumes
