how do I adjust the bobbin tension on a brother XL 3022 sewing machine?
My sewing machine is sewing straight stitch ok on the top but the undeneath is very loose. I have adjusted the bobbin tension both plus and minus without any improvement. How can I fix this problem? All I wanna do is sew and its driving me crazy. HELP someone.
You’ve misthreaded the top of the machine. Don’t mess with the bobbin tension until you’ve figured out how a sewing machine is supposed to work.
Most likely, you threaded with the presser foot down, and the top thread never got into the tension. If you raise the presser foot, the top tension will open automagically. You might also be trying to sew with the presser foot up or the top tension is set too loose. Or you’ve got a dirty top tension.

Take a look at the stitch samples here — they’re top and bottom of the same fabric piece that I sewed on a correctly threaded machine and on the same machine that I deliberately misthreaded. Blue thread is on the top spool, red thread in the bobbin. Bet yours looks like the last 6 photos.
Since you’ve messed with the bobbin tension (a small screw on the bobbin case), set the top tension to 4 and then carefully adjust the bobbin tension a bit at a time until you get something that looks like the top two photos. Be very careful if you’re adjusting bottom tension — the little bobbin case screw is likely to hop out and roll away, never to be seen again.
