so work out what you want a camera for
work out what features you need
work out what camera closest matches those features

however things to look for
lens optical quality (often indicated by the f stop a bigger fstop range is good a low f number is good
if its a zomm lens camera then a reasoanable zoom range, ideally in the 25mm..75mm range.
reasonable ISO/ASA rating, at least 400, preferably 800 or more
reasonable battery capacity (a Lithium ion should last longer, take more pictures and be less problematical over time
good ergonomics if the camera doesn’t fit your hands and feel natural then it doesn’t matter how good or bad it is.
is the camera right for you, theres no point in buying a camera which is too fiddly and complex to use if what you want to take is what is sneeringly called snaps.. if you want holiday memories, noghts out and so on get a realtively inexpensive digital compact that is easy to use
if you want a bullet proof and bombproof camera, don’t rule out the Olympus mju stylus cameras

ultimately the best camera is the camera you happen to have to habd when you want to take ‘that’ picture. and that doens’t need to be a dSLR, it doesn’t need to be a digital camera.. it could be anything even a disposable film camera
