What camera would be recommended for a newbie, the pentax k100d, nikkon 40d or the cannon eos rebel xti?
I am using a point and shoot now. I want to upgrade cameras to follow my children growing up and I have no experience of any kind in photography but love gadgets. Looking to post pics online and order prints online as well. In addition what two lenses should I purchase if I was only looking at getting a body.
A DSLR is a nice step up but you’ll get the most benefit from learning photography. As has been said, a good photographer produces better pics with a bad camera than a bad photographer does with a good camera.
I wouldn’t even consider the 40d, I don’t like the last of an autofocus motor in the camera. This means every lens you buy will need to have AF in the lens. You’ll save money on the body and pay more in the long run for the lens.
This brings the comparison to the Pentax and the Canon. 100D has Image Stabilization (IS) built into the camera. This allows you to take a shot with a slower shutter speed and it drastically reduces any blur. If you were going to take a picture at 1/80th of a second, you can now take one at 1/20th with little to no blur. Great for low-light.
The Canon doesn’t provide IS in its cameras, it does it in the lens instead. So while you can get it, you’ll pay more for that lens, generally a few hundred more.
My opinion is that the Pentax gives the most flexibility.

I’d suggest the camera, the P DA 50-200mm lens mentioned in the rebate and if you expect to need something for low light, a prime lens (single distance like 50mm or 85mm instead of a range) at either f/1.8 or even f/1.4. The 18-55mm lens is another good one.
