Pentax Medium Format
Pentax Medium Format
What are the drawbacks to the Pentax 645 as a first medium-format camera?
The first 645, not the N/NII.
And ignoring 6×4.5/6×6/6×7 format issues.
1) The lack of any digital back which can fit the 645, if you ever decide to upgrade to digital.
2) You cannot change backs in light. Many other medium format cameras allow you to interchange backs by inserting a slide; with the 645, there are interchangeable film backs, but you have to do it in total darkness. It’s not really usable for changing the backs.
3) Someone else mentioned there’s no shutters in lenses, but in fact this is incorrect. I own a 135mm leaf shutter lens, and there’s also a 75mm leaf shutter lens for my Pentax 645N, and they fit the original 645.
Other than that, this is a great way to get into medium format shooting. You just need to be aware of these limitations. Generally speaking too, you need to be aware that medium format can be expensive to shoot, develop and print. This tends to make digital very attractive, because after the high initial investment, the costs drop much more.
