What are some good lenses to begin with for a Canon XTi?
I’m going to sell my Pentax K100d and upgrade to a Canon XTi, and naturally I need good lenses to go with it. For the Pentax, I have a Tamron 18-200mm (f/3.5-6.3), and while I love the focal range, it isn’t very sharp and takes a long time to focus.
Anyways, I have a fairly limited budget ($300-400) for lenses, so L lenses are unfortunately out of the picture. I like taking outdoor shots, such as landscapes and wildlife, and generally use telephoto more than wide angle. Also, I do the occasional portrait, so a prime lens for high quality portraits/macros would be nice.
What do you recommend within these boundaries?

Ok, if you are going to change then look at a canon Ef 50mm f1.8 Mk2. Cheap as chips but optically very strong. Very nice portrait lens and great in low light.
Canon 55-250 IS. Nice & light, good optically, a wee bit lightweight build (but as you don’t have L cash…) OS is great and gives good reach.
