epsons are pressurized and often have chips that MUST be reset. hps are actually remarkably easy to refill, as are canon. i would never buy a brother printer if my life somehow depended on it.
not sure where you got your info, but i refill for a living, and have for over two years, and own a canon.
i would not attempt to refill epson carts at home, even though they are good photo printers. they clog way too easy, you need a chip resetter, and it’s nigh impossible to get them refilled correctly without a lot of patience and the right equipment.

Most printing jobs are straightforward and whether you use unbranded, cheap inkjet cartridges or manufacturer compatible ink cartridges, the quality of printing should suffice for everyday home or office use.
However, there will be occasions when a higher level of colour mixing fidelity to the image you see on your PC screen will be required, so it’s worth knowing a little of how printer ink cartridges work so you have a better idea when choosing your next set of replacements.
The basic principle to remember is that the way the colours of an image is delivered to your PC screen is very different to producing a colour image by inkjet on paper.
- On your PC screen – the added colours you see projected and mixing together are based on the principle of RGB, which stands for Red, Green Blue.
- On inkjet paper – the subtracted colours you see reflected on inkjet paper are based on the principle of CYM, which stands for Cyan( Green/Blue), Yellow and Magenta (Red).
On your PC screen – when light represented by each of the three colours (RGB) is added, the eye will ‘see’ any other intended colour, if the individual RGB colours are mixed in just the right proportions.
On inkjet paper – the material on the page absorbs part of the white light and only reflects back to the eye, the colours which have not been absorbed. Inkjet printers reproduce the principle by employing CYM, based on the three primary colours which subtract colour to create other colours.
Well known examples of colour subtraction is the addition of cyan and yellow to make green, and the mixing together of all three to create black or none at all to make white.
By printing millions of dots closely together, an optical illusion is created and the eye is fooled into thinking it is observing a continuous colour of different hue. A less saturated red could be made up from red dots with an increasing amount of white space in between them. The effect would fool the eye to ‘seeing’ this colour as pink.
According to the colour theory, black in is made up by mixing all three colours together. However, in practice it has been found that a far sharper image quality can be obtained by to just having black added as an additional colour.

either the cartridges are faulty, which is unlikely, or the heads on the printer are clogged. if it’s a head clog, is there a cleaning utility you can run? you can also remove the cartridges and drop rubbing alcohol in the place where ink enters the printer. wait half an hour for the alcohol to dissolve the clog and evaporate. put the cartridges back in and try again. good luck.

I’m looking at HP, Epson and maybe some other brands. which one is more ink friendly?
I’m okay with either inkjet or laser but I want to make sure that the printer can continue printing black and white even when the color cartridge runs out. (am currently using a brother pain in the ass)

How to Fix a Toner Error on a Brother Printer
With all of the high tech equipment that is coming on the market today, it is normal for people to encounter technical glitches and other problems. This includes computers and their accessories. A computer printer is one device that sometimes can have technical problems.
For a Brother printer, the message “Toner Error” is normally caused by the improper installation of the drum and/or toner cartridge, or the printer will not recognize the toner. To prevent the printer showing “error” or “not recognize” when installing a toner cartridge, follow the steps listed below which was retrieved from FixYa.com, a technical support and troubleshooting site for consumers with computer related problems:
1. Confirm that you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly recommends that you use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Incompatible toner cartridges may damage the printer.
2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge for your printer. Some cartridges can look similar to Brother Cartridges. Authenticate the part number before using the cartridge.
3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner cartridge by carrying out the following steps:
a) Push the cover release button and then open the front cover.
b) Remove the old drum device and toner cartridge unit. Place it on paper to prevent toner splatter.
c) Hold lock lever down on the right and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
d) Check the toner cartridge for any broken or missing components. If you find damage, you will have to replace the cartridge
4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum unit. If it was damaged, get a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into the drum unit.
5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine and then close the front cover.
6. If the message “Toner Error’ continues to appear on the display, unplug the printer and then open the front cover and remove the drum and toner unit.
7. Check inside where the drum was located. On the left side wall, check for a small, black plastic lever/actuator.
8. Check the actuator/lever to see if it is stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and spring forward to operate properly.
If the lever does not move, spring back, or is missing, and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437)
If the lever moves freely and springs back, continue to Step 9.
9. Reinstall the drum and toner unit, close the front cover and then plug the printer back in.
