what pentax camera sensor size is compatible with the pentax smcp-da 40mm f/2.8 limited for large format paint?
my largest painting and drawings are 4×5 feet, i need to see detail in my prints
Hi Dennis,
Pentax has only had one sensor size so far for DSLRs — “APS-C”, approximately 24mm x 16mm. The 40/2.8 pancake is compatible with them all.
If you’re interested, the 40/2.8 also fills a 35mm film frame, which is about 24mm x 36mm, and it works on Pentax K-mount film SLRs. But if you’re looking to capture the most detail, even the best film would be challenged to compete with current DSLRs.
More to the point, though — why do you want to do this with the 40/2.8? It’s an odd choice for that task. The 40/2.8 is usually chosen for casual walkaround use because it is extremely tiny and lightweight. It makes a small DSLR like the k-x or k-r almost as convenient to carry around as a compact point & shoot.
But your task is much more serious — capturing lots of detail in quite large paintings and drawings. Frankly that’s a lot to ask of the 40/2.8. Instead I would suggest looking at a good macro lens. Macros are generally much better at keeping the field of focus flat (it’s curved in most lenses) and minimizing distortion. Also they’re great at capturing detail.
I think almost any macro Pentax has made since the late 1960s would be a better choice for your quite serious task than the fun-loving little pancake. The SMCP-D FA 50mm f/2.8 would be an excellent choice, or to spend less I’d look at a used SMCP-F 50mm f/2.8 or SMCP-FA 50mm f/2.8. Here’s one:

$300 for a DSLR is going to be quite a feat. I would look for a used on Ebay (Buyer Beware)
Instead I would suggest a fully manual Point and Shoot from Canon or Nikon.
The price range you are looking at should land you a camera in the 8MP range with decent optics out front.
Find the newest models from each of the manufactures and then review last year’s model. The prices normally drop significantly after the new models hit the street.
But act fast…. sometimes they are hard to find!
