Tips for travelling with an SLR?
Hi, i have a DSLR, and i’m going to Nepal for a month. Since Nepal is not a hugely safe country, and i will be exposing my camera to risks – thieves, rain, being damaged in my pack, etc – does anyone have tips? What should i do when travelling with it? It is a Pentax k200d with an 18-250mm lens, in a camera bag. I will be trekking (Annapurnna) for approximately 10 days, will be spending time in Pokhara, Kathmandhu and other places, and will possibly be volunteering at an orphanage for a week. I am 15, and will be with a group of other young people, with three adults. I’m going in November, which is in winter i believe, but i’m unsure of the weather. I will be taking out insurance on my camera, but dont really want to have to make a claim!
Does anyone have advice? Where should i keep my camera? Are thieves likely to be a problem? What to do with it while trekking? How to protect it from weather, damage etc? And most importantly – how should i carry it? round my neck? in my pack?

Nothing is In A Name
Sony, Nike, Gucci, BT, Microsoft, Ford, Armani… and so on, names we come across in daily life, these are top “manufacturer brands”, then there are Tesco, Next, M&S, GAP, Burberry, Virgin etc, these are top “retail brands”. Most of us are very familiar with these brands as we have seen them around for a long time and have grown to trust them, we know who they are and what to expect from their products.
It is also common practice for people to become brand loyal too, i.e. you try and like the products of a brand and then stick to that brand, or buy a product like a Fuji digital camera and use a Fuji memory card to go with it. In fact, the brands actively encourage brand loyalty e.g. if you buy an Epson printer, the company’s literature will encourage the use of Epson ink cartridges.
Many people are then surprised, to learn that their famous brand camera, watch, car, clothing, computer etc, is not actually made by the company whose name appears on the product, but by another company they perhaps have never heard of. This company is known as the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) being the actual manufacturer of the product which is sold under it’s own brand, or the brand of another company, often using that company’s design, specifications etc.
Some OEM relationships are public knowledge e.g. Tesco do not produce instant coffee, so, an instant coffee producer makes Tesco instant coffee. Other OEM relationships are less obvious e.g. BT fax machines are mostly made by Olivetti, early Hewlett Packard digital cameras were made by Pentax and 70% of the notebook computers sold in the world (Dell, Compaq, HP, Apple, IBM, Sony etc.) are made by Quanta Computers in Taiwan and MG City Rover is made by Tata, the largest car manufacturer in India.
Many OEM relationships are well-kept secrets or at least kept discrete and known only to industry insiders e.g. Dell and Lexmark, from 2002 Lexmark produce Dell inkjet printers, laser printers and related print cartridges. Sony and Sandisk jointly develop and produce Memory Stick cards, which are sold under both brands etc.
So, is this a good or bad thing? Well, it’s a good thing for the consumer because these joint collaborations drastically reduce new product development and production costs, ultimately this saving translates into lower prices of products for all of us. However, it is worth bearing in mind, that a more expensive brand may not necessarily be a better product, or even any different to a lower priced product.

I have an RZ67 and I must say I love it’s flexibility and the bellows focusing. I love interchangeable backs as well. Backs allow me to change the format of my RZ67 from 645 to 67 if I choose. Also allows me to go from B&W to Slide film in mid roll.
The Pentax is a good machine too. Not as flexible but it is lighter.
Some consider the lenses made for 7ii the finest that have ever been made for the 67 format, however, as you alluded too, they are extremely expensive.

I’m trying to buy a Sigma 100-300 f4 in a Pentax mount, I want to buy it from the USA because the dollar is so weak at the moment I can save about £200 but it seems to be out of stock everywhere I try… any ideas of a store which may have it available?
Also, why are these lenses so expensive in Britain?? It isn’t just the exchange rate that makes it cheaper to buy abroad.

Pentax K10D and Sigma 17-70mm lens.?
The kit lens provided by this Pentax DSLR camera isn’t good enough.Is Sigma 17-70mm lens compatible with Pentax K10D ?
The Sigma is a nice lens and generally reviews well. Depending on your budget you may also want to consider:
1) Pentax 28-105 F3.5 Zoom – very nice medium length zoom that maintains good image quality (reasonably priced).
2) Pentax 24-90 F3.5 Zoom – another very nice medium length zoom that is priced under $500.
If top quality is what you’re after then you may want to consider looking at a telephoto (non-zoom) instead. As good as some zooms are (and those listed above perform quite nicely) they are a compromise in terms of total picture quality.
If I were to mount one, non-zoom prime lens on a 10D it would be the Pentax Limited 77mm F1.8. It will run you around $600 and doesn’t offer any zoom capability, but it offers truly great performance.

My Pentax super program’s shutter is locked. Has been fixed quickly before at a repair shop. Can i fix it?
Like i stated, i have a Pentax super program camera. About every two years the shutter gets locked up and won’t fire. ( I think this is related to the camera’s battery becoming low). I have taken it to the same repair shop for years when this problem occurs. It literally would take them only 2 minutes to fix the problem. The repair shop is now out of business. Does anyone know how i can fix my camera? Thanks
Even after the battery is replaced the camera won’t work.
Replace the battery. It’s probably a pair of MS76 or LR44 batteries. Just unscrew the little metal cover with a quarter and there should be two small button batteries in there. Go to the electronics counter at Target or similar stores, and they should have a battery display with lots of small batteries like this. Or order them online.
